Ontario NDP demands senior levels of government take action to address unsafe water

THUNDER BAY – As two northern Ontario Indigenous communities have declared states of emergency this month due to unsafe drinking water, a Far North MPP says people living under long-term drinking water advisories want to be treated as human beings.

MPP Sol Mamakwa (NDP, Kiiwetinoong), along with Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath, this week visited Neskantaga First Nation, which since 1995 has been under a boil water advisory, and Attawapiskat First Nation, which issued an emergency declaration nearly two weeks ago after water testing found a dangerous level of chemicals.

“Our communities are fed up. They need action,” Mamakwa said in Thunder Bay on Friday, adding two Attawapiskat community members are on a hunger strike until federal and provincial ministers show up. “The province hasn’t shown up. The province hasn’t called Attawapiskat.”
