A small percentage of the population struggling through severe poverty and social isolation is using a large share of provincial health-care dollars, according to research conducted by the North Simcoe Community Health Link.
Five per cent of people in Ontario use two-thirds of all health-care dollars, while 10 per cent of the population accounts for nearly three-quarters of health-care dollars.
“If we really want to make a dent in terms of making health care more sustainable over the long run, we really need to have a good understanding of who those people are,” said Gary Machan, the facilitator leading the local research project.
