Stanton Territorial Hospital previously suspended medical services due to summer forest fires

The Stanton Territorial Hospital in Yellowknife is again accepting medical travellers from the Kitikmeot region, Nunavut’s Health Department announced on Tuesday.

The hospital reopened last month after suspending services due to the forest fires outside of N.W.T.’s capital over the summer. The fires spurred a full evacuation of the city Aug. 17.

Medevac flights bound for Alberta also diverted to Winnipeg due to the forest fires.

Post-evacuation efforts in Yellowknife have since allowed for an increase in service levels to accommodate medevacs and scheduled appointments that service the region, said Danarae Sommerville, Department of Health spokesperson, in a statement.
