WRHA, Movember launches first subarctic Indigenous mental health addictions centre in Canada – Winnipeg Sun

Sep 26, 2021

Movember and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority have officially launched the first subarctic Indigenous mental health addictions centre in Canada, celebrating one year of operations.

“This is the first of its kind in the subarctic and for years men have had to go to various cities (in the) south and east … to get treatment for mental health and addictions support,” said Sonia Prevost-Derbecker, Movember’s Global Director of Indigenous Programs. “We know that having a cultural lens and having your family supports and your community within close access is really, really important in terms of outcomes and we know that shipping men to various treatment places and options has not had as high an outcome as they could.”

The Churchill Wellness Centre, located in Churchill, will continue to provide much-needed mental health and social inclusion support for residents living in the northern city and surrounding areas, with a focus on supporting local Indigenous men.
