Wildfire smoke advisory for the South Baffin Region

Press Release

August 6, 2025

The Department of Health is issuing an air quality advisory in the South Baffin Region related to smoke from wildfires in neighbouring jurisdictions. There is currently wildfire activity in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario that may impact air quality in the South Baffin Region.

Smoke exposure can irritate your eyes, make breathing difficult and worsen chronic heart and lung diseases. Those at higher risk include elders, pregnant women, children, and individuals with respiratory or heart issues.

To reduce your exposure to smoke:

  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities and stay indoors with windows and doors closed.
  • Use fans to stay cool if needed.
  • Use a free-standing indoor air filter if available.
  • Avoid burning candles or anything that adds to indoor pollution.
  • Limit the use of exhaust fans when not cooking.

If anyone is experiencing more serious symptoms, such as chest pain or difficulty breathing, go to the local health centre immediately.

The Department of Health will notify communities if additional safety measures become necessary.
