Western Quebec’s health authority CISSSO says the Gatineau Hospital emergency room is fully reopening as of Monday and the St-André-Avellin ER will start opening 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays. It credits the hard work of current staff and says hiring 25 more staff is part of the reason these services can return.
Paramedics and 911 dispatchers are used to working in emergencies, but years of ongoing ambulance shortages have been made worse by the pandemic and now the pressures on those front-line workers in Ottawa have reached a “boiling point”, according to their union.
Ottawa’s medical officer of health says she’s concerned that just 43 per cent of the 482 inmates at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre have at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose. The jail continues to deal with another large COVID-19 outbreak.
