What’s the latest?

As Canadian hospitals continue to struggle to catch up on the backlog of health needs caused by COVID-19, supply shortages are adding further stress to the system.

“We are told by our hospitals that they’re seeing upwards of 600 individual product disruptions every week, and that has been their experience since early spring 2021,” said Kendra Frey, a vice-president at HealthPRO, which helps 1,300 Canadian health-care facilities with procurement.

Ontario high schools will shift back to regular semesters no later than February, returning secondary students to a normal schedule for the first time since the onset of the pandemic.

School boards will be able to make the change sooner if they have their local public health unit’s support, Education Minister Stephen Lecce announced Thursday.

Ottawa Public Health (OPH) reported 48 more COVID-19 cases Wednesday and the death of someone in their 90s who had COVID.

How many cases are there?

As of Thursday, Ottawa has had 31,539 confirmed cases of COVID-19. There are 376 known active cases, while 30,549 cases are considered resolved and 614 people have died from the illness.
