The chief of Black Lake First Nation says nearly three dozen suicide attempts have been recorded in less than two months in the northern Saskatchewan community, but budget restraints are limiting the availability of mental health workers.
Chief Coreen Sayazie said the community, located in the boreal forest about 1,000 kilometres north of Saskatoon, has suffered about 30 suicide attempts over the last seven weeks.
“We need more hands-on in our community,” she said.
“The management of the health authority has cut our mental health workers. They’re not able to work overtime.”
