Only visitors seeking essential services are being permitted access to Walpole Island after a 24-hour checkpoint went up Wednesday evening.
The restriction, similar to those enacted by other First Nations, is to help protect vulnerable First Nation members – many with chronic underlying health conditions that make the novel coronavirus and COVID-19 more dangerous, First Nation officials said.
Some people have been seen joyriding or visiting members, said director of operations James Jenkins, which goes against physical and social distancing measures in place provincially.
Visitors must now go directly to the service they’re there to access, and leave immediately with no additional stops or visits.
