Walpole Island declares state of emergency – Sarnia Observer

Walpole Island First Nation has declared a local state of emergency amid the COVID-19 pandemic response.

Reasons for the move include “enabling actions to protect our community to ensure people take social distancing seriously, and to access funding and support from outside agencies and organizations,” officials said Monday in a press release, urging people to stay home to limit the coronavirus’ spread.

“We hope to raise the level of awareness of how important it is to practise social distancing to help flatten the curve and protect our most vulnerable members,” Chief Daniel Miskokomon said in the press release.

“The high prevalence of underlying health conditions makes our community particularly vulnerable and we would like to remind our members that we all have a responsibility to keep each other safe.”
