The sound of drums echoed through downtown Winnipeg Thursday at an event held to honour residential school survivors and bring attention to the ongoing suffering advocates say that system has caused to generations of Indigenous people.

On Thursday, hundreds took to the streets of downtown Winnipeg for what was dubbed the Survivor’s Walk, and many later gathered at Memorial Park near the Manitoba Legislative Building where there was a sacred fire and drumming.

Wayne Mason is the executive director of the Way-Say Healing Centre, an organization that works to support survivors of residential schools, as well as day schools, and the ’60s scoop.

Mason said events like the one on Thursday are important to bring awareness about the impacts of residential schools, but said he and others also want to see more people in Canada start to refer to that system and those schools as an act of genocide.

“We want to honour the survivors, and we want to start bringing a lot more attention to that word genocide, because that’s what this was,” Mason said.
