Signage will educate hikers about Indigenous medicine
A longtime Wye Marsh volunteer has a vision of creating something new on the property to promote respect for Indigenous people.
“We want to install a medicine walk. It is a project to acknowledge and respect traditional Indigenous knowledge of medicinal plants and trees,” said Peter Cox, a member of the Friends of Wye Marsh.
The medicine walk would take the form of signage around the property pointing out native plant species and their uses.
When the plants come up, Cox plans to go on a walk with a local Indigenous elder “who possesses the knowledge” to identify the plants and trees that can be signed.
