KINGSTON — Those who wish to walk for Kingston’s Indigenous population will be doing so online this year.
On Aug. 22 and 23, Queen’s Walkhome is hosting a virtual walkathon to raise funds for the Sexual Assault Centre Kingston’s Indigenous Counselling Program, which provides support and counselling for Indigenous survivors of sexual violence.
According to Ben Davies, head manager of Walkhome, the service got the idea to support the Indigenous Counselling Program because of recent incidents of racism and oppression that have occurred not only in Ontario but at Queen’s University.
“There’s obviously been lots of unfortunate incidents lately around the school regarding racism and oppression, and many of these have been hateful acts targeted towards our Indigenous community,” Davies said. “So what we wanted to do was find a way to show support for our Indigenous students at the school as well in the community.”
