U of A alum wins major award for cancer-fighting immunotherapy discovery – GLOBAL

University of Alberta alum, Michel Sadelain, is being recognized for his major discovery in the cancer-fighting immunotherapy field — one that is already helping cancer patients fight disease.
The scientist is being awarded with the 2024 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences after discovering cancer treatment that uses a patient’s own T-cells to heal.
“Of course it’s personal recognition for work over the past decades, but I think more importantly, it’s recognition for the emerging form of immunotherapy that we have developed, which is now often referred to as CAR therapy,” he said.
There are different types of immunotherapy that can be used for cancer treatment, Sadelain explained, one being preventative vaccines, however it was not overly effective.
