Trichinella alert for Naujaat

August 26, 2016

Public Health Advisory
Trichinella alert for Naujaat
Naujaat, NU

The Department of Health is advising residents of Naujaat that a walrus harvested on August 10, 2016 has tested positive for trichinella.

Meat must be thoroughly cooked before eating so you don’t get sick. Freezing or fermenting does not kill trichinella. Do not eat or feed infected meat to animals as they can also get sick.

If you have eaten any uncooked walrus meat recently, and have experienced symptoms such as stomach pain, muscle pain, diarrhea, swollen eyelids, sweating and weakness, then you might be infected with trichinella.

Let your health care provider know that you ate uncooked walrus meat if you have any of these symptoms.

Testing your walrus will prevent anyone from getting trichinosis. Before eating walrus meat that someone else caught, ask if it has been tested.
