The recipients focus on preparing kids for high school and beyond.

At first, it took her 45 minutes to solve just two division problems. By June, the student could complete a whole worksheet, front and back, in a single tutoring session at Eva Rothwell Centre.

This, said program lead Khailani Srikanthan, is the impact of regular tutoring through Stimulate the Brain!, which was launched to address the pandemic’s effects on student learning.

“It was an amazing change to see,” she said.

The free afterschool program in central Hamilton, designed to help students in Grades 6, 7 and 8 succeed in reading, writing, math and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) ahead of the transition to high school, was recently awarded a $15,000 grant from the Hamilton Community Foundation. The money, Srikanthan said, is being used to help prepare at least 15 kids for high school and beyond.
