Study: Inequities in pharmaceutical access and use
In 2021, over one in every five (21%) adults in Canada reported not having any prescription insurance to cover medication costs. This lack of coverage sometimes meant delaying or skipping doses because of an inability to afford medication or paying higher out-of-pocket costs.
Nursing and residential care facilities in 2020
Canada’s nursing and residential care facilities were adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The number of employees in this subsector dropped 2.1% year over year. The number of residents in this subsector on the last day of the fiscal period fell 4.3% year over year, primarily due to fewer residents in nursing care facilities and community care facilities for the elderly. This decrease was largely driven by fewer admissions to those facilities.
A portrait of landlords and their rental income: A tax data perspective
In 2020, 7.9% of families declared rental income, up from 7.0% in 2008 (+335,850 families). Median annual family net rental income (rental income after deductions) was $2,750 in 2020, indicating that net rental income does not represent a large portion of the total income (2.3%) of most of these families.
Recent Economic and Social Developments
Canada’s economy has been resilient as it emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic. Economy-wide output has strengthened substantially since mid-2021, supported by higher goods production and a robust recovery in many client-facing services. The unemployment rate has been below its pre-COVID baseline since early 2022, while the proportion of Canadians in their prime working years who are employed reached record highs at mid-year. Despite this strong recovery, many challenges remain as households and businesses continue to adjust to rising prices, supply disruptions and tight labour markets.
