A fifty-year look at divorces in Canada, 1970 to 2020

In 2020, there were 42,933 divorces granted in Canada, a sharp decrease from the 56,937 divorces recorded in 2019. While the number of divorces in the country has been generally declining for many years, this 25% annual decrease is the largest since the Divorce Act of 1968 came into force.

Energy statistics, December 2021

Primary energy production closed 2021 at 1.9 million terajoules in December, a decrease of 1.0% year over year. Despite the slight decline, December 2021 was the highest production month since January 2021. Year over year, primary energy production had been on a steady rise in 2021, attributable to the significant impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the energy sector in 2020. Declines in crude oil (-3.6%) and coal (-22.9%) production were largely offset by ongoing increases in natural gas production (+6.3%).

Wastewater analysis suggests that use of particular opioid pain medications decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020

Following our July 2021 release that focused on fentanyl, cannabis, and methamphetamine, new results from Statistics Canada’s Canadian Wastewater Survey (CWS) indicate that the load of morphine or methadone did not differ significantly in wastewater from 2019 to 2020. In contrast, codeine load appears to have decreased over the same period.

Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy Regional and Community-level Database Version 3.0

According to a new Statistics Canada study, the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) supported one in six employees of rural businesses from January 17 to May 8, 2021. This accounted for one-tenth, or $1.5 billion, of the CEWS amounts disbursed nationwide by the program over this period. Rural areas are defined as regions outside census metropolitan areas and census agglomerations.
