Canada’s population estimates, first quarter 2025

From January 1 to April 1, 2025, the population of Canada increased by 20,107 people to reach 41,548,787 people. This was the smallest quarterly growth since the third quarter of 2020, when the population decreased by 1,232 people in the wake of border restrictions to slow the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Study: Concern about misinformation—connections to trust in media, confidence in institutions, civic engagement and hopefulness, 2023/2024

In 2023, close to 6 in 10 Canadians reported being very or extremely concerned about the presence of misinformation online. Misinformation, which is news or information that is verifiably false or inaccurate, can affect public trust in institutions, which in turn can have various impacts on social cohesion or civic engagement.

Monthly credit aggregates, April 2025

In April, the total credit liabilities of households rose 0.3% (+$10.1 billion) to reach $3,079.3 billion, decelerating from March (+0.4%). Real estate secured debt, composed of both mortgage debt and home equity lines of credit, grew 0.4% (+$9.9 billion) in April. Household mortgage debt increased 0.4% (+$9.1 billion), accelerating from March (+0.3%). In April, the policy interest rate remained at 2.75%.

Avoidable hospitalizations among racialized groups, 2016 to 2024

Avoidable hospitalizations—that is, instances where timely and appropriate ambulatory health care could have prevented the need for hospitalization—are a key indicator of access to primary health care. They include hospitalizations related to health conditions such as asthma, diabetes and hypertension that could have been treated by a primary health care team. A new table on annual age-standardized avoidable hospitalization rates among racialized populations in Canada from 2016 to 2024 (including hospitalizations from April 1, 2016, to March 31, 2024) is now available using updated 2016 Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohort (CanCHEC) data and rates standardized to the 2021 Canadian standard population.
