Being satisfied with family relationships is related to positive well-being, 2024
Family Day, which was recently celebrated in many provinces throughout Canada, encourages residents to spend additional quality time with their families and highlights the importance of family relationships. In 2024, three-quarters (75%) of Canadians reported having a high level of satisfaction with their family relationships.
Fall and drug overdose deaths are main contributors as accidental deaths continue to increase, 2017 to 2022
There has been a steady rise in the number of accidental drug poisoning deaths since 2000, with some exceptions (2003 and 2019). A notable 59% increase in these deaths was seen in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of fall-related deaths has steadily grown from 1,570 deaths in 2000 to 7,997 in 2023.

The prevalence of obesity among Canadian adults has increased over time with the most recent estimates indicating that about one-third have obesity. Obesity is associated with several health conditions, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers. The article “The health consequences of obesity history and weight fluctuations in adulthood” shows that having obesity at multiple time points throughout adulthood or experiencing large weight fluctuations further increases health risks.
Quality of life indicators from the Canadian Social Survey, fourth quarter 2024
Tables for 14 indicators in Canada’s Quality of Life Framework have been updated to include Canadian Social Survey data collected from October to December 2024 (fourth quarter of 2024). These indicators include life satisfaction, sense of meaning and purpose, future outlook, loneliness, someone to count on, sense of belonging to local community, satisfaction with time use, satisfaction with local environment, discrimination and unfair treatment, confidence in institutions, trust in others, satisfaction with family relationships, satisfaction with friend relationships and sense of belonging to Canada.
Monthly credit aggregates, December 2024
In December, the total credit liabilities of households rose 0.5% (+$13.9 billion) to reach $3,033.4 billion, accelerating in growth from November (+0.4%). Real estate secured debt, composed of both mortgage debt and home equity lines of credit, grew 0.4% (+$9.1 billion) in December. Household mortgage debt increased 0.4% (+$8.5 billion), slowing in growth from November on an annualized basis (+4.6% in December; +5.3% in November). On an annual basis, household mortgage debt increased 4.1% in 2024, an acceleration from 2023 (+3.5%). In December 2024, the policy interest rate decreased 50 basis points, the fifth consecutive reduction, ending the year at 3.25%.
