Payroll employment, earnings and hours, September 2020
In September, the number of employees receiving pay or benefits from their employer—measured in the SEPH as payroll employment—rose by 337,500 (+2.2%). This followed an increase of roughly 1.8 million payroll jobs from June to August, and brought the total payroll employment change since February to a decline of 1.2 million (-7.3%).
Deaths, 2019
There were 284,082 deaths in 2019, the highest annual total since the vital statistics registration system was introduced in 1921. The increase in the number of deaths is expected and is due to population growth and aging.
Provisional death counts and excess mortality, January to September 2020
COVID-19 has had and continues to have a clear impact on communities and families across the country and many have lost family members and friends. To understand both the direct and indirect consequences of the pandemic, it is important to measure excess mortality, which occurs when there are more deaths during a period of time than what would be expected for that period. It should be noted that, even without a pandemic, there is always some variation in the number of people who die in a given week from year to year. This means that the number of deaths that would be expected falls within a certain range of values.
Detailed preliminary data on confirmed cases of COVID-19, January 15 to November 22, 2020 (revised data)
An updated set of preliminary data on the number of confirmed novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases reported by provincial and territorial public health authorities to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is now available. Along with this dataset are two aggregated tables that summarize the information available in the dataset. The updated information covers the period from January 15 to November 22, 2020.
Aircraft movement statistics: Major airports, September 2020
In September, the total number of aircraft movements in Canada was down 30.3% from September 2019, with itinerant traffic (flights from one airport to another) declining 39.8%.
Monthly civil aviation statistics, September 2020
In September, the recovery of air travel flattened out as major Canadian airlines carried 914,000 passengers on scheduled and charter services. This was down 86.8% from the same month in 2019, and down 16.2% from August 2020—similar to a typical seasonal decline.
Monthly estimates of business openings and closures, August 2020
According to estimates, the number of business closures edged down in August, as COVID-19 restrictions continued to ease. In August, 34,126 business closures were observed in the Canadian business sector, 2.7% less than in July and 14.2% lower than prior to the COVID-19 pandemic in February. This decline in closures may reflect the fact that businesses that were least able to adapt to the pandemic had already exited the economy in preceding months. For the second consecutive month, the number of business openings (40,697) exceeded the number of business closures. Nevertheless, the number of active businesses was 9.0% lower in August than in February.
Dairy statistics, September 2020
The total amount of milk sold off farms increased 1.7% year over year to 768 736 kilolitres in September. Meanwhile, milk sold off farms for fluid purposes increased 2.5% to 229 186 kilolitres. Milk sold off farms for industrial purposes increased 1.3% year over year to 539 550 kilolitres.
