Payroll employment, earnings and hours, May 2020
The number of Canadians receiving pay from their employer is measured in the Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours (SEPH) as payroll employment. SEPH payroll employment decreased in May, falling 585,100 (-4.1%). This followed declines in March (-0.9 million) and April (-1.9 million), and brought total payroll employment losses since February to 3.4 million (-19.9%).

Major Canadian airlines carried 224,000 passengers on scheduled and charter services in May, down 96.7% from the same month in 2019. This follows the unprecedented decline of 97.0% observed in April 2020.

Urban public transit, May 2020
The collapse in ridership on the country’s buses, trains and subways continued in May, resulting in another month of historic decreases compared with the previous year. On a year-over-year basis, the number of transit passengers started declining in March (-42.0%), fell sharply in April (-85.0%) and remained low in May—down 82.8% compared with May 2019.
