National balance sheet and financial flow accounts, third quarter 2022
National net worth, the sum of national wealth and Canada’s net foreign asset position, declined 3.3% at the end of the third quarter to $17,174.4 billion. This represented a drop of over half a trillion dollars and was the largest decline since the fourth quarter of 2008.

After the market recovery in the second half of 2020, following the sharp decline at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, equities continued to rise throughout 2021. The Standard & Poor’s 500 posted annual gains of 26.9% in 2021, outperforming domestic markets which saw the Toronto Stock Exchange increase 21.7%. That sustained momentum was a significant contributor to the growth in total pension wealth, which rose 7.9% in 2021 to reach nearly $4,867.8 billion by the end of year.
Atlantic Canada experiences a recent uptick in retaining skilled immigrants
Using the 2021 Longitudinal Immigration Database, this release examines how the five-year retention rate of provinces and territories changed among immigrants admitted from 2010 to 2015. It also highlights the short-term achievements of the Atlantic provinces in retaining skilled immigrants.
Households and the Environment Survey, 2021
Just over in four Canadian households (26%) reported making purchases to feed or shelter birds on their property in 2021. Households in the Maritime provinces (36% to 37%) were more likely to have done so compared with the rest of the provinces (22% to 29%). Households in large urban areas were less likely to have made such purchases compared with those not in large urban areas (22% compared with 37%).
Firearms and violent crime in Canada, 2021
While police-reported violent crime in Canada increased 4% from 2020 to 2021, the rate of firearm-related violent crime decreased 5%. Despite this recent decline, firearm-related violent crime has generally been increasing since the early 2010s. The rate of firearm-related violent crime in 2021 was 25% higher than it was a decade earlier in 2012.
Profile of Canadians who experienced victimization during childhood, 2018
Almost 3 in 10 Canadians aged 15 years and older (27%) experienced childhood victimization, which includes at least one instance of physical or sexual abuse at the hands of an adult—such as a parent, another family member, friend, neighbour or another adult—before age 15.
Leading indicator of international arrivals to Canada, November 2022
International arrivals to Canada—non-resident visitors and returning Canadians—more than doubled those arriving in November 2021 but have not yet reached levels recorded before the COVID-19 pandemic.
