Canada’s international transactions in securities, January 2024
Foreign investment in Canadian securities amounted to $8.9 billion in January, led by acquisitions of government debt securities. Meanwhile, Canadian investors reduced their holdings of foreign securities by $7.6 billion, led by sales of equity securities.

Wholesale sales (excluding petroleum, petroleum products, and other hydrocarbons and excluding oilseed and grain) grew 0.1% to $82.4 billion in January.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, globalization and participation in global supply chains were often associated with economic benefits. However, the pandemic and its aftermath have highlighted the risks associated with global supply chains, such as acute shortages of essential goods, disruptions to domestic production of goods, and higher inflation.
