Real gross domestic product (GDP) of the natural resources sector rose 2.9% in the third quarter, led by energy (+3.4%). In comparison, the economy-wide real GDP rose 1.3% in the third quarter.

National culture indicators, third quarter 2021

Real gross domestic product (GDP) for the culture and sport sectors in Canada increased 2.9% to $13.5 billion in the third quarter, marking five consecutive quarterly increases, nearing pre-pandemic levels. By comparison, real GDP for the total economy rose 1.3% during the same period. Household spending on recreational and culture services was up again in the third quarter, which helped bolster growth in GDP for the culture and sport sectors.

Informal unpaid caregiving provided by family and friends has become increasingly recognized as serving an important role in society and in the economy. Informal caregiving can give people who help friends or family a sense of well-being, lower the economic burden for families, and reduce costs to governments and other organizations associated with health services and institutionalization. In addition, care recipients benefit from this support when they can remain at home and maintain a more positive quality of life.

Detailed preliminary data on confirmed cases of COVID-19, January 15, 2020 to January 9, 2022 (revised data)

An updated set of preliminary data on the number of confirmed novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases reported by provincial and territorial public health authorities to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is now available. Along with this dataset are two aggregated tables that summarize the information available in the dataset. The updated information covers the period from January 15, 2020, to January 9, 2022.
