Dease Lake Update

Dease Lake usually hosts a great Canada Day celebration; however, this year we will be holding a virtual online event. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

People’s Haven is working on having Alysha Hawkins, qualified hairdresser, from Telegraph Creek come in to provide haircuts. Hopefully, this will happen soon.

If you are needing your hand sanitizer refilled please contact Tina Etzerza or call the People’s Haven to decide. If you have a mask, please wear it when you go into public spaces within our community. If you do not have a mask and would like to wear one, please contact the Haven to arrange to pick one up. Please be responsible in your decision-making process and remember we are all in this together.

Iskut Update

Iskut has decided to keep our Gate up until June 30th. This decision was made to monitor who comes in and out of our community and to protect our community members. We will still have security at the Kluachon store to ensure that the public is not entering the store but they can be assisted with payments for fuel.

Our Garden is coming along nicely. The fence is up, and we are waiting on plywood for our garden boxes. Soil is on the way and we are planning our next steps. So nice to see the plans coming together.

Today is the first day that the Doctor has returned to Iskut Valley Health. This has not happened since the pandemic happened!

Our Headstart/PreSchool graduates will be having an individual door to door grad ceremony. Thank you for making this happen for our young kids. On top of that we would like to say thank you again for continuing to drop off Craft packages to keep our kids busy and happy while learning!

Our Language Nest is back, and staff is back in the office. We are so happy to have the ladies back in the office. They have sent out crafts to help get our language around the community; for example, paint rocks with our family member and write the word like dad or mom in Tahltan on the rock and hide it in the community for others to find.

Telegraph Creek

We continue to update and educate our community as we move into Phase 2 of this pandemic, including our bi-weekly bingo where we have been doing short blurbs during intermission as we have approximately 25 households and many community matriarchs that can assist with the education to families. The message remains: If you are experiencing any symptoms such as cough, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, loss of smell/appetite, STAY HOME & UNTIL TEST RESULTS ARE BACK AND CLEARED TO BE IN THE PUBLIC & BACK TO WORK!

Our social team remains active; movie packages were provided to households with children and youth and were asked to take a photo to be posted on our community site. Father’s Day projects are under way with the youth. Home-made masks are in demand and are continually being made and distributed. If you require one, please call the Rec Center at 250-235-3100. Adult bingo was a success, several camping chairs were won and the 3-burner stove went as the jackpot prize.

Tahltan Center has backed off on their order of fruit, veggies, and dairy due to a surplus of stock the past few weeks. Scheduled shopping times for Elders remain in effect and is going well. Masks and hand washing are mandatory for all upon entering the Tahltan Center.

The Rec Center Gym is being utilized and restrictions are being followed. Hours are 9am-4pm & 7pm-9pm. Bring your own water bottle, towel, five participants and any one time, disinfect equipment prior and after use, sign in/out with each use.

Tahltan School continues with a rotating schedule with families to support students with their studies. The nursing station continues to limit access, while providing crucial services to our community.

The Sawmill Lake upgrade is moving forward, and we are installing a playground and upgrading the dock and picnic area. There was some damage to the dock, picnic tables & fire pits from the 2018 wildfire. Fish Camp is also seeing a few upgrades to our existing cabins with new paint and windows installed in the two cabins built last year.

Please call Sheila at the Band office, 250-235-3151 to inform her of your travel plans outside our community/Territory. Your participation is appreciated as this will increase our safety and help track contact of COVID-19 if we should have a case in Telegraph Creek.
