Surge of COVID-19 Cases in Qikiqtaaluk Region

Press Release

04 January 2023

The Department of Health is advising Nunavummiut of a surge of COVID-19 cases over the holidays in Iqaluit and the Qikiqtaaluk Region. COVID-19 remains a potentially serious illness, and Nunavummiut should continue to protect themselves and their loved ones:

  • Get vaccinated and boosted when eligible.
  • Self-isolate if you feel sick (sore throat, fever, cough, runny nose, and/or loss of sense of smell/taste).
  • Wash your hands with soap and water thoroughly and often; use hand sanitizer frequently.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and dispose of the tissue. Cough into your upper sleeve if you don’t have a tissue.
  • Wear a mask in healthcare facilities.
  • Practise social distancing.

If you are worried about COVID-19 or test positive and need assistance, please call the COVID-19 Hotline, available from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET, Monday to Friday, at
1-888-975-8601.

To decrease the risk of severe infection, hospitalization and death, the Department of Health recommends that everyone who is eligible and is not up-to-date on their COVID-19 vaccines get their vaccinations.

You can find more information on COVID-19 vaccination on the Department of Health website: www.gov.nu.ca/health/information/covid-19-vaccination.
