Supporting Métis Mental Wellness during the winter months

Press Release

February 20, 2026

The winter months are often the most difficult time for mental health. Shorter daylight hours, colder temperatures, and fewer opportunities for social connection can contribute to increased stress, low mood, anxiety, and feelings of isolation.

Research from the Canadian Psychological Association indicates that approximately 15 per cent of Canadians will experience some form of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) in their lifetime, with symptoms often intensifying during the winter months.

The Métis Nation of Ontario’s Mental Wellness program supports the emotional, psychological, and social well-being of citizens across Ontario. The program emphasizes early support and prevention, recognizing that timely access to care can help people manage challenges before they escalate.

Culturally grounded supports include short-term counselling and care navigation to help identify appropriate services and resources. Supports are available in English and French and can be delivered in person, by phone, or virtually, ensuring flexible access for citizens in all regions of the province.

While this time of year can be difficult for many people, these services are available year-round to all citizens.
