Street Outreach Program Launched – City of Yellowknife

July 14, 2017

The City of Yellowknife is pleased to fund the Yellowknife Women’s Society, to launch a Street Outreach Program beginning Monday, July 17.

The Street Outreach Program provides transportation to a shelter or the sobering centre to intoxicated individuals who require assistance. The program is offered from 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. seven days a week from qualified staff and volunteers. These individuals will be monitoring the downtown area in a marked van, and on foot, providing brief intervention and support to those in need.

Public are encouraged to call the Outreach Program hotline at 867.445.7202 to request assistance for persons in need.

“This model has worked very well in other jurisdictions and we feel that the Outreach Program will complement additional homelessness initiatives currently underway. In addition the program should ease the call volume to emergency responders,” said Mayor Heyck.

City of Yellowknife funding for the Street Outreach Program begins July 17 and extends until December 31, 2017. Continued funding will be discussed by Council during the 2018 Budget process.
