Statement from the Minister of Health after meeting with First Nations, Inuit and Métis leaders

This evening, I met with the Assembly of First Nations’ Ontario Regional Chief and Health Committee Chair Chief Isadore Day, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami President Natan Obed, British Columbia Métis Nation Council President and Minister of Health Bruce Dumont and my provincial and territorial colleagues to hear their perspectives on the health priorities and challenges of First Nations, Inuit and Métis.

As the federal Minister of Health, I am determined to support positive change and I know that by working together we can address more existing gaps in health status. This is an important step towards building a renewed nation-to-nation relationship.

I look forward, tomorrow, to hearing my provincial and territorial colleagues’ ideas about how we can collectively engage Indigenous Peoples.

I am committed to working in a spirit of reconciliation, respect and cooperation, in partnership with First Nations, Inuit and Métis leaders, the provinces and the territories and my federal colleagues to make meaningful and concrete progress on this important Canadian health issue.
