OTTAWA, ONTARIO (April 28, 2017) – The Honourable Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs, and the Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Health, issued the following joint statement today:
“A nutritious diet is essential to good physical and mental health. Unfortunately, many families in northern communities face significant challenges in accessing affordable, nutritious food.
The Government of Canada is committed to working with Northerners to find solutions that will improve the Nutrition North Canada (NNC) program. As part of this commitment, we are pleased to announce that the findings from the 2016 NNC community engagement sessions are now available online.
The What We Heard report is a result of more than 3,500 comments received via community meetings, interviews, written submissions, online surveys and social media. In total, more than 500 people from all over Canada shared their views.
We invite all Canadians to review the feedback and the report, which are a valuable foundation for upcoming discussions. We are looking forward to meeting with Indigenous representatives and groups, retailers, air carriers, provinces, territories and other government departments in the coming weeks to further explore options and next steps for the NNC program.”
