Position Summary
Interior Health’s Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) invites applications for the role of Staff Anesthesia Assistant (AA). RIH is looking for an adaptable, knowledgeable Staff Anesthesia Assistant with experience in performing technical duties related to anesthesia, such as testing, preparing and maintaining anesthesia equipment and supplies; and performing clinical duties related to assisting Anesthesiologists with the induction, maintenance and recovery phases of anesthesia.RIH is a tertiary hospital and is the region’s main referral centre offering a full range of healthcare services consisting of 250+ beds. RIH’s Operating Room supports 8 types of elective surgeries and two Emergency Rooms; on average 30+ elective surgeries are performed per day, in addition to supporting its very busy trauma centre. We have a great, supportive team of six Staff AAs. Staff AAs can expect to be involved in complex, medical situations and are valued and appreciated by the multidisciplinary team surrounding them.

As a member of the RIH Operating Room Team, you will assist the Anesthesiologists with patient preparation and the induction, maintenance and recovery phases of anesthesia by performing duties such as patient assessment, positioning, explaining procedures/equipment, preparing, attaching and/or inserting invasive and non-invasive monitoring equipment, airway management, intubation, and gas adjustment, as requested.

This is a permanent, part time position eligible for Interior Health’s comprehensive benefits plan that includes coverage for basic Medical Services, Dental Services, and Extended Health. Schedule of work will fall into a Monday to Friday rotation consisting of Days (06:00 to 14:00, 07:00 to 15:00) and Evenings (09:30 to 17:30); on-call is required Nights and Weekends.

Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience:
• Graduation from a recognized school of Respiratory Therapy plus three years’ recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Completion of an accredited post-graduate Anesthesia Assistant diploma program.
• Current certification with the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT).
• Eligible for registration with the British Columbia Society of Respiratory Therapists (BCSRT) and CSRT.
• Current certificates in CPR, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).Skills and Abilities:

• Communication: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, the public, medical staff and the members of the interdisciplinary team using, oral written and computer communication means. Demonstrated ability to effectively resolve conflict.
• Critical Thinking: Demonstrated ability to integrate and evaluate pertinent data (from multiple sources) to problem-solve and make decisions effectively. Applies the problem solving process demonstrating critical thinking and decision making skills using a systems approach.
• Management: Demonstrated ability to organize work, set objectives and establish priorities. Manages time and resources, implements activities to promote cooperation among the interdisciplinary team, supervises responsibilities of others, and collaborates across disciplines.
• Leadership: Promotes staff morale, engagement, and risk-taking. Demonstrates creative planning for change and innovations, implementation of IH policies or other protocols, and ongoing professional development of self and others.
• Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and a commitment to excellence in the provision of client care.
• Equipment: Demonstrated computer skills including the use of Meditech and Windows based programs. Demonstrated data analysis skills including appropriate data analysis and reporting tools. Demonstrated ability in the use of e-mail and word processing. Ability to operate other related equipment as required in the specific practice area.
