St. Mary’s Paediatric Clinic receives $500,000 donation from Cameco

Today, the St. Mary’s Wellness Clinic received a half-million dollar donation from Cameco toward improving health outcomes for inner city children in Saskatoon. The clinic, located inside St. Mary’s elementary school, is a partnership between Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools, Saskatoon Tribal Council, and the University of Saskatchewan Department of Paediatrics.

The clinic brings paediatric services to children in school may other not receive vital services due to barriers such as distance, lack of transportation or inconvenient operating hours.

In operation since 2007, the clinic improves accessibility to a range of services for patients and families. By integrating in the school environment, it has proven that children’s academic performance improves when physical and mental health needs are met.

By working with parents, school staff and health practitioners, the clinic offers comprehensive healthcare support for chronic medical conditions; mental health services including evaluation, treatment, crisis intervention and counselling; and prevention and intervention services.

Quick facts:

  • The clinic, in conjunction with a new school facility, has revitalized attendance rates at St. Mary’s
  • More than 900 students visited the clinic between 2007 and 2011
  • Similar programs are now running from W.P Bate Community School and E.D. Feehan High School
  •  The full-time receptionist is employed by Saskatoon Tribal Council
