We are excited to announce the creation of an innovative new position within Atlohsa to help strengthen our patient care services. Shauna Kechego-Nichols, our Director of Programs, has taken on the new role of Director of Clinical Care and Intensive Services.

Shauna has been a valued member of Atlohsa since joining us in 2020, bringing with her an extensive experience in government stakeholder relations, social work, government negotiations, public policy, and health research. She’s a registered Social Worker and proud member of the Chippewas of the Thames First Nations, with diplomas in Broadcasting Television, Advanced Filmmaking, Social Service Worker, Indigenous Healing Practices, and a BA in Sociocultural Anthropology from Western University, as well as a Master of Social Work from the University of Toronto.

Shauna has 15 years of experience in research and development initiatives related to intimate partner violence, intersectionality, and health equity. She has also worked at Ontario Trillium Foundation, supporting Indigenous and Black youth organizing for community and systemic change. Shauna is a junior scholar with published academic literature on illnesses and ailments through refugee displacement and Indigenous migration. As the Director of Programs for Atlohsa, she focuses on building a Wholistic Trauma-informed Social Work practice for children, youth, and families.

In her new role as the Director of Clinical Care and Intensive Services, Shauna will supervise two programs, the Kenkwit’:ne Healing Space and Biigajiiskaan, which provide land and culture-based programming and services for FNMI community members and address immediate mental health needs and intergenerational trauma and violence experienced by Indigenous people. We’re thrilled to have Shauna leading this vital work, and we’re excited to see how her vision and expertise will help us continue to provide care that’s grounded in our knowledge, culture and values.
