The rate of sexual violence across Chatham-Kent, Ontario and Canada is getting worse; many victims fear coming forward with some not trusting police, and if they do report, many are often shamed or blamed.
Soulliere was among those who took part in a flag-raising ceremony at the Civic Centre in Chatham to mark May as sexual assault awareness month.
She noted statistics show only 33 out of 1,000 instances of sexual abuse are actually reported to police and charges are only laid in about 12 cases.
Soulliere is confident some changes can be made, “but it’s going to take a lot of effort.
