Three initiatives position SFU to meet growing challenges such as the rising cost of living and long hospital wait times

Virtually all B.C. residents have been affected by at least one of them. Demands on B.C.’s healthcare and housing infrastructure are only expected to heighten in coming years, as the province is home to four of Canada’s fastest growing metropolitan populations.
With year-over-year growth in student enrolment and a rapidly expanding research program, Simon Fraser University (SFU) is experiencing a similar boom. But the university’s rising profile — and the addition of a medical school, expanded student housing and a vital space to support Indigenous students and staff — holds promise to help see the province through the challenges of the next decade.
The Surrey campus’ medical school is expected to launch in 2026 and will be the first to open in Western Canada since the University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine welcomed its first class in 1970.
