In 1967, when Melvina Aubichon was five years old, her parents took her across the lake from Patuanak to the residential school in Île-à-la-Crosse, Sask. — a scene that repeated again year after year.

“September was always the loneliest time for me,” she said. “We would watch my mom and dad go across the lake, and it was so lonely, being left behind as a child, very lonely.”
