Rethinking Patient Safety

Press Release

October 29, 2024

The Department of Health encourages Nunavummiut to join us in recognizing Canadian Patient Safety Week from October 28 to November 1, 2024. This year’s theme is Rethinking Patient Safety with the goal to promote important conversations about safe and culturally safe care with Nunavummiut and health care workers.

Patient safety is key to a positive healthcare experience. It is a shared responsibility, requiring patients, families, and providers to work together to reduce risks, address biases, and create a safer care environment. Canadian Patient Safety Week is a chance to reflect on all aspects of safety at our health centres – physical, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual – and how together, they create safer healthcare in Nunavut.

Here are three actions you can do that can have a positive impact on your health care experience:

  1. Ask questions. During your next visit to a health facility, ask questions, share concerns and be part of decisions about your health.
  2. Share your experience. Contact the Office of Patient Relations at
1-855-438-3003 or patientrelations1@gov.nu.ca to discuss your healthcare experience, confidentially.
  3. Fill in the survey to win! Complete the department’s Canadian Patient Safety Week Client Engagement Survey by contacting your Community Health Representative by phone or setting up an appointment with them. When you fill in the confidential survey, you will be entered into a regional draw.

The Department of Health is excited to join all Nunavummiut and health staff in recognizing Canadian Patient Safety Week.
