The first-ever census of Penticton homeless population found there are 128 people in the city without roofs over their heads – double what organizers expected.
“When we first started this, our estimate was 60,” Ian Gerbrandt told council Tuesday.
“People thought that 60 was conservative.”
Gerbrandt is the community investment manager for the United Way, a member group of the 100 Homes Penticton campaign, which conducted the count Nov. 7-11. Volunteers from 13 non-profit organizations scoured the streets, homeless shelters and other agencies and spoke to a total of 203 people.
