Ganohkwasra executive director says people need ‘to work on grieving some of our traumas that we’ve had’

When Lee-Ann Miller was in her late 30s, she said she got so high on prescription pills and alcohol, she “lost her mind” and woke up in hospital.

The feelings that would compel her to use drugs would often come at night, which is why she said she found the counsellors who were available 24 hours a day at Ganohkwasra, the shelter in Six Nations, so vital.

“Addiction is strong, it’s real, and it usually wins,” said Miller.

Miller said she’s spent nearly a lifetime seeking help for her addiction; now she’s five years sober and sharing her story with others.
