Residential long-term care unit in the Kitikmeot Regional Health Centre officially opened

Cambridge Bay, Nunavut (March 22, 2017) – The official opening of the renovated residential long-term care unit in the Kitikmeot Regional Health Centre took place today with a ribbon cutting officiated by Nunavut’s Minister of Health George Hickes.

“This residential long-term care unit is an important step towards providing a ‘made-in-Nunavut’ strategy for the care of all Elders in the territory,” said Minister Hickes. “In addition to expanding Health’s capacity to care for Elders in Nunavut, we have expanded our local workforce with 17 new personal care workers, who received on-the-job training.”

The Department of Health repurposed the inpatient unit at the Kitikmeot Regional Health Centre in Cambridge Bay to accommodate seven residential long-term care beds, and one respite/palliative care bed. The level of care provided at the unit is for Nunavummiut who require professional nursing care that cannot be provided at home.

The first two residents in the eight-bed facility were admitted in mid-February.
