The Department of Health & Social Development will soon be launching a new model for its mental health & addictions programs. The program area will be called “Mental Wellness & Healing Services”. It will provide help to those with mental health issues (trauma, grief, depression, parenting, etc), alcohol/drug abuse, gambling issues and the families/caregivers who support them. The Department wants to have a symbol designed to represent the new directions the program will take.
These new directions are based on Labrador Inuit values and will take a holistic approach to the delivery of services.
The goal of the mental wellness and healing programs will be: To create supportive environments that promote the health & resiliency of Labrador Inuit, their families and communities.
Requirements
The symbol must have meaning for Inuit, something unique to the culture and something they can identify as their own. DHSD hopes the symbol will come to represent hope & new beginnings for Labrador Inuit who will be using the services. Therefore, key elements that need to be reflected in the design are:
• Inuit culture/heritage and the strength of Inuit.
• A lit Kudlik (kullik), Inuksuk & the Chert (stone spear). *
• The passing of knowledge, traditions & strength from past & present generations to the next generation.
• Showing/guiding the way towards mental wellness and healing.
• Hope for the future.
The successful artist must be able to work with Department Health & Social Development on design and content specifications or adaptations. The design will become the property of Nunatsiavut Government.
* Meetings were held with Elders to discuss symbols for this work. Report available upon request.
