Renovations Continue On $6-Million Project At St. Anthony’s Hospital In The Pas

Manitoba News Release
November 16, 2007

New Emergency Room, Special-care Unit Officially Open

A new emergency room and special-care unit were officially opened today as part of a $6-million renovation project at St. Anthony’s Hospital in The Pas, Health Minister Theresa Oswald has announced.”This project builds on our commitment to invest in capital projects that ensure Manitobans have access to the quality health-care services they need,” said Oswald.  “This investment in the emergency room and special-care unit will provide both patients and staff with a more functional space.”

The renovations to St. Anthony’s Hospital include a new, three-bed special-care unit and a renovated exam and treatment area for emergency care.  Construction on the final part of the project, a 10-station dialysis unit which replaces an existing four-station unit, is continuing and expected to be completed by early 2008.

“Both the community of The Pas and our region will benefit from this major renovation to the emergency department and the special-care unit,” said Drew Lockhart, chief executive officer of the NOR-MAN Regional Health Authority.  “These departments are now much more functional, efficient and better equipped to meet the emergency needs of our clients.”

The renovation of the hospital supports the goal of the government’s Northern Development Strategy to provide quality health care. Other goals include:

– ensuring good housing,

– providing reliable transportation,

– enhancing employment and training opportunities, and

– building economic development.

“Providing quality health-care services to Manitobans living in the north is one of the key priorities of our Northern Development Strategy,” said Healthy Living Minister Kerri Irvin-Ross, attending the grand opening in The Pas today.  “In addition, the redevelopment will help the region’s recruitment efforts by making St. Anthony’s Hospital a more attractive place to work for health-care professionals.”

Other recent health projects in the NOR-MAN area include:

– opening a new, primary health-care centre in The Pas
that provides access to primary health care, mental health services, and health promotion, prevention and education programs.

– building St. Paul’s Residence, a 60-bed, $9.7-million personal-care home in The Pas;

– creating the Aboriginal Midwifery Education Program at the University College of the North with one of the teaching sites in The Pas; and

– building a new geothermal ambulance and EMS training facility at St. Anthony’s Hospital.
