Renewed Focus on NWT Vaccine Uptake, New Tools and Resources for 5-11 Group

Press Release

In advance of National Kids and Vaccines Day on January 27th, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has developed engaging new COVID-19 resources for NWT children aged 5-11 and their parents.

In conjunction with the Vaccine Tips Sheet for Parents, the 5-11 Vaccine Q&A, and the “Health Professionals Talk” video, these new resources include:

  • A new video: Kids Talk, which features children in the NWT discussing why the vaccine is important to them.
  • A superhero comic book: The Arctic Vaccinator, which helps children learn more about how the vaccine works and why it helps the community, through a Northern-based adventure.
  • An Arctic Vaccinator colouring sheet: children can submit their entries along with a quote about why the vaccine is important to them, for a chance to win a prize.

Quote(s)

“The GNWT is committed to providing accurate and accessible information about the COVID-19 vaccines to all residents. I am pleased that we’re able to offer these engaging resources to residents. I encourage NWT youth to read about the Arctic Vaccinator, and learn how they can become a Vaccine Hero!”

– Julie Green, Minister of Health and Social Services

“As our youngest residents still represent the largest unvaccinated group, they have the highest risk of catching COVID-19. I encourage children, youth and families to check out these wonderful resources. Getting vaccinated is still our strongest defense against COVID-19. ”

– André Corriveau, Acting Chief Public Health Officer

Quick facts

  • 57% of NWT children aged 5-11 have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine.
  • 77% of the territory’s population aged 5+ are fully vaccinated
