Removal of Highway 5 Border Checkpoint Between Alberta and NWT

Press Release

July 21, 2021

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT)  will remove the Highway 5 checkpoint station located at the Alberta/ Northwest Territories (NWT) border near Fort Smith starting August 1, 2021. The last full day of operations will be July 31.

The COVID Secretariat has worked with the Office of the Chief Public Health Officer (OCPHO) on the decision to remove the Highway 5 border checkpoint.  Local Indigenous leaders and the Town of  Fort Smith have been notified of this decision.

Fort Smith currently has one of the highest vaccination rates in the NWT.

The border serves as a gateway into Wood Buffalo National Park and popular destinations on the Alberta side of the border such as the Pine Lake area and the Salt River trail network. When the checkpoint is removed, the pass system needed to travel to those locations will be discontinued.

Alberta residents intending to camp in Wood Buffalo National Park will still be able to travel to Wood Buffalo National Park via Highways 1, 2 and 5. Border security at Highway 1 will notify the Compliance and Enforcement Officer located in Fort Smith of Alberta travellers en route to Wood Buffalo National Park. Alberta campers and tourists must abide by person in-transit conditions in Section 1(j) of the current Public Health Order – COVID-19 Travel Restrictions and Self-Isolation.

NWT residents can contact ProtectNWT with inquiries and complaints, and Officers will investigate all complaints.
