Ratsénhaienhs Arnold Boyer attending Pope’s visit

Press Release

(Kahnawake – 27, Ohiarihkó:wa/July 2022) The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to inform the community that Ratsénhaienhs Arnold Boyer will be present for the visit of Pope Francis at Ste. Anne de Beaupré taking place tomorrow (Thursday).

He will accompany his parents, both of whom are residential school survivors.

Afterward, Ratsénhaienhs Boyer will participate in a meeting of Chiefs and leaders from throughout the Quebec region to follow-up on the events of the day, and to discuss potential next steps in the wake of the Pope’s apology.

“We must remember that the survivors have been asking for a formal apology from the church for many years,” said Ratsénhaienhs Boyer. “Their healing journeys have encompassed their entire lives, and perhaps we can now look towards a future where we can accept that today’s world is not the same one we saw in the past. No one will ever forget the wrongs of the past, and we shall continue to work towards true healing. Most important, we must continue to do all we can to support those who suffered the abuses of the residential school system.”
