Quebec Teens to Play Ball Hockey in Support of the ONEXONE First Nations School Breakfast Program
Montreal – Apr 18, 2013 – While the Montreal Canadiens and their fans focus on making the NHL playoffs, over 150 young street hockey players from around Montreal will be storming the nets this weekend in a charity event to help feed underserved First Nations children right here at home.
To date, over a dozen teams have registered to participate in the day-long tournament taking place on Sunday, April 21st, 2013 and held simultaneously at two Montreal schools: Bialik High School, and Hebrew Academy.
“Our mission at the Human Promise is to build a more civil society and to raise funds and awareness for youth persecuted based on their culture, religion, or ethnicity,” stated Avery Adessky, co-organizer of the Human Promise Hockey Tournament. “When we discovered the ONEXONE First Nations School Breakfast Program, we at Human Promise felt obligated to lend a hand and focus on building a more civil Canadian society.”
Since its inception, the Human Promise has raised $40,000 to tackle international suffering including supporting victims of genocide in Darfur and children in Rwanda. This year, it chose to partner with ONEXONE to help provide nutritious, fresh food to children living in remote Canadian First Nations communities.
“We are extremely proud and grateful to work with the Human Promise to benefit First Nations children right here in Canada,” said Joey Adler, Founder and Chair of ONEXONE. “The funding will provide students with a wholesome and healthy breakfast in an effort to help students reach their full potential.”
In past years, guests such as Stanley Cup winners Réjean Houle, Ken Dryden, and coach Jean Perron have attended the games. These high profile supporters have always brought something special to inspire the kids, not only to play hockey but to do good in their community.
“If the young people involved in the Human Promise are any indication as to the commitment and motivation of the upcoming generation, then the world has a lot to look forward to,” The Honorable Irwin Cotler said. “I’ve had the pleasure of attending Human Promise events, including the hockey tournament. Their passion and optimism is inspired, and inspiring.”

The Human Promise is a youth-run, not for profit, social justice organization. Founded in 2007, by Adam Shapiro, 14 at the time, focused his abundant creativity and vision and enlisted the aid of fellow Bialik High School students and the Canadian Jewish Congress (now Center of Israel and Jewish Affairs), to create The Human Promise. Members of The Human Promise immediately began empowering their peers to solve real world problems and started raising money for, and educating students and adults alike on the situation in Darfur.
