SUDBURY, ON – Dr. John McLaughlin, a leader in Canadian population health and cancer research, is in Sudbury today to learn more about Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI). Dr. McLaughlin, the Chief Science Officer and Senior Scientist of Public Health Ontario, toured the new HSNRI Walford facility and met with leading scientists.
During his visit, Dr. McLaughlin met with Interim CEO of HSNRI, VP of Research and Scientific Director, Dr. Janet McElhaney to further understand the research taking place at HSNRI and in Sudbury. “We are very excited Dr. McLaughlin was able to visit with us today and understand the importance of health research taking place in the North, by the North and for the North,” says, Dr. Janet McElhaney. “Dr. McLaughlin has been a consistent champion of our community-based Indigenous projects and he has a strong understanding of our region’s unique health challenges and opportunities.”
A public seminar was held with members of the public health and research community to further understand the role of Public Health Ontario and their role in population health research across the province. “It’s been an amazing opportunity to learn from partners and stakeholders regarding the critical research being done in the region to better assist communities and improve the health care equalities in the region,” says Dr. McLaughlin.
HSNRI is committed to population health and improving the quality of care for Northern populations. The Institute’s Northern and Indigenous population health research focuses on the specialized needs of populations such as Indigenous peoples; those with chronic health conditions; and those in rural and remote areas.
