Public Health Advisory Lifted For High Levels of Manganese in Nahanni Butte’s Drinking Water

Press Release

NAHANNI BUTTE – The Chief Environmental Health Officer is informing all residents of Nahanni Butte that manganese levels in the community’s drinking water are now safe. Residents can resume normal use of the water.

This advisory was originally issued as a precaution due to high levels of manganese detected in the community’s drinking water.

A new filtration system has been installed, and manganese levels are now below Canadian guidelines. The Chief Environmental Health Officer, along with the community government, will continue to monitor the drinking water and perform regular testing.

Recommendations:

Manganese may have built up in home water tanks and distribution system. The Department of Health and Social Services recommends that residents and businesses flush and clean their water tanks.

The community government of Nahanni Butte will assist residents with cleaning their tanks. Please contact the community government for more information.
