March 24, 2017

Attend a free screening and panel discussion of The Mask You Live In, a documentary that follows the lives of young men as they negotiate strict expectations of manhood. Themes include the rejection of emotions and genuine relationships, which correlate to men’s higher rates of mental illness, suicide and violent crime.

Date: Saturday, April 1, 2017
Time: 4 – 6:45 p.m.
Location: Metro Cinema, 8712 – 109 Street
Cost: FREE

An engaging panel discussion will follow the documentary featuring:

  • David Shepherd, MLA for Edmonton-Centre

  • Ryan King, Edmonton Eskimos

  • Dr. David Long, King’s University

  • Elder Phillip Campiou

  • Kala Sritharan, Newcomer/Activist

The panel will explore how gendered expectations constrain and shape the lives of boys and men. The panelists come with a range of backgrounds, experiences, and knowledge, as well as a passion for change. Being both vulnerable and open, panelists will speak about their experiences negotiating masculinity in their own lives, the broader social forces shaping masculinity, and how they hope to transform it.

The event is part of the City of Edmonton’s initiative to end gender-based violence and sexual assault in Edmonton.
